Calendar

16.1         CALENDAR

The academic year begins on July 1 and ends on June 30.  The academic year will be defined as 175 instructional days of which up to eight (8) days are for staff development.  First- and second-year contract members will work up to three (3) additional days (for a total of 178 days for new faculty orientation.)

16.2         SUMMER SESSION and WINTER INTERSESSION CALENDARS

The 2005 winter intersession calendar will be determined in a joint meeting between the ACE Council or designees, the Director of Human Resources and the Vice President from each college.  The 2005 winter intersession will be excluded from the academic year as defined in 16.1 above.  All future summer sessions and winter intersessions will be negotiated as specified in 16.4.  Any future winter intersessions recommended and approved as specified in 16.4 will be excluded from the academic year as defined in 16.1.

16.3         FLEX DAY ACTIVITIES

Flex days activities will be approved in compliance with Title 5.  Flex days activities for each academic year will be coordinated through a joint staff development effort between the colleges.  Representatives from ACE, the Academic Senate and the District will be included in the planning process for flex day activities.  Flex day activities will include some activities generated at the department level.

Student needs shall be the determining factor in scheduling flex day activities.  Therefore, members may develop alternative activities to fulfill their obligation for flex days by submitting the appropriate independent flex activity application.

There will be no obligation for part-time faculty in the following categories to attend flex days activities:

1.               Directed studies

2.               Work experience

3.               Classes starting after Labor Day

4.               Instructors that do not have classes scheduled on a day in which flex days fall.

5.               Hourly counselors/librarians and/or instructional lab faculty.

16.3.1    As part of the regular academic calendar, members are required to observe regular absence procedures of notification and absence reporting for flex days.

16.3.2    Flex Day Exceptions

Instructional schedules will be established to meet the days and/or hours of instruction required by state mandates for specific programs.

Members teaching classes in programs with mandated days/hours not met by the flex calendar will meet the teaching requirements of the program in lieu of flex day attendance.

16.4         Academic Calendars

2004-2005 Calendar:  For 2004-2005, the winter intersession calendar will be determined in a joint meeting between the ACE Council, the Director of Human Resources and the Vice President from each college.

2005-2006 Calendars: The 2005-06 and all future academic calendars including summer sessions and winter intersessions will be determined through negotiations between the District and ACE.

Amended by Tentative Agreement dated 2/15/05:

The District and ACE agree to the District’s proposed calendar presented on February 1, 2005 dated December 30, 2004 for the 2005 summer session and the 2005 fall semester.  This proposed calendar clearly indicates that the summer session includes Fridays.  However, ACE is willing to accept the proposals from West Valley and Mission Colleges regarding the actual scheduling of courses on a Monday through Thursday basis with the stipulation that this is not meant to indicate that Fridays have been excluded from the summer academic calendar.

ACE agrees to recognize the two presidents holidays in February 2006 on any days negotiated with SEIU.

The District will present a calendar to ACE for the remainder of the 2005-2006 academic year at a later date.

Amended by Tentative Agreement dated 5/24/05:

The District and ACE agree to the District’s proposed calendar presented on May 24, 2005 for the summer 2005, fall 2005 and spring 2006 semester.  It is understood that Lincoln’s day may be observed on either Monday, February 13 or Friday, February 17.  Such change may result in a revision in the calendar for spring 2006.  The District will provide a final calendar to ACE as soon as a decision is made regarding this holiday.
